Caravaca de la Cruz is a place of reference for the cult of the Catholic Church, since since 1998, during the papacy of John Paul II, it has been classified as one of the ten holy cities of this religious denomination2, having the privilege of celebrating the Year Jubilar in perpetuity every seven years around the Most Holy and Vera Cruz de Caravaca.
The first of them took place in 2003 and included the visit of Cardinal Ratzinger, who was later elected as Pope with the denomination of Benedict XVI. Due to this circumstance, and by the very name of the Municipality, it is also known as “The City of the Cross”.
Besides being known for the Christian relic and its beautiful Old Town of medieval origin, it is also for the Patron Saint Festivities in honor of it, held between May 1 and 5 of each year, declared of International Tourist Interest in 2004 Along with the processions and parades of Moors and Christians, the celebration of the Caballos del Vino, which at present aspires to be declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco, is especially relevant.
